Donation boosts beach community  by Rose Stirling

Baylys Beach is to get a new community centre as the result of an anonymous donation which will provide a state of the art building, housing a hall, lifesaving equipment, a first aid unit and an apartment.

The chair of the newly formed Baylys Beach Community Trust, Graeme Ramsey, says: “a local benefactor has given the people of Baylys Beach a very generous gift. “We have wanted a community facility like this for a long time, but we’ve never known how we would be able to pay for it, and now we have something that I think absolutely exceeds our wildest dreams.” The donation has allowed the trust to purchase land on the corner of Seaview Road and Bayly Street. “We’re working to a specification which includes garaging facilities for surf life saving equipment, a first aid room and a self contained apartment in which surf life savers can stay when they are out here patrolling over the summer months. At the moment they come from outside the area and are required to rent a property in the area. So it’s an immediate cost saving for them. “On top of that it will be a multipurpose community centre with kitchen and other facilities, so it can be used for functions, it can be used for play groups, indoor bowls and whatever the community needs. “The hall part of it will be over 97 square metres alone. The trust plans to start building in the spring and is encouraging local people to get involved in the building process. “Already a number of local firms have spoken about their support for the build. So it’s going to be a real community

I am very proud of all of our team.” The judges’ comments included praise for ‘some very good portfolios from smaller community newspapers outside the main centres, such as the Kaipara Lifestyler, and added that ‘Miss Miller and her colleague Ann Morgan had excellent material drawn from the farming sector and addressed a good range of topics’. Sales excellence award winner, Betty Willets, ‘showed evidence of her creative thinking and problem solving. Scouts from the Kaiwaka-Mangawhai group are set to walk between the two towns picking up roadside rubbish as part of their fundraising to attend the upcoming 21st New Zealand Scout Jamboree in Renwick, Marlborough. Each scout is collecting sponsorship for the walk on June 11 and 12 to go toward the cost of the 10day event.  It’s now a BMX bikers heaven at Wellsford Primary School after the opening of a new track. Philip Lees, Wellsford School’s head of department for physical education says it was made possible with funding from Transpower who donated money for the track as well as bikes and helmets. The purpose of the track is to build healthy, safe, active communities with free access. The track will be open for pupils during break time and then to the public after hours. The track closes daily at 7.30pm.

Chair of Commissioners

At the start of May, Council staff and Commissioners went to the community in a series of ‘round-table’ sessions, to talk about our Annual Plan. This was a good chance for residents to find out more about what is happening in their communities; the Mangawhai Town Plan, the place-making initiatives for Kaiwaka and Dargaville, as well as bringing up ideas and suggestions for us to think about.

For all your paint and panel repairs

It was really encouraging to see and hear a positive buzz amongst the many who took part. Ideas were floated and constructive feedback provided.

Our Annual Plan will be operative from 1 July. It builds on the solid work done so far to achieve a sound financial footing for the district.

It is, however, the community that is fundamental to driving our district forward. The place-making initiatives could not happen without strong community involvement. The fresh and interesting ideas that residents have put forward, the enthusiasm and time they have injected into these projects is a demonstration of just how a positive, motivated community can shape where they live to reflect their needs and lifestyles. The feedback from our round-table sessions shows too, that it can be the small contributions that together make a big difference. In Paparoa, the planting and keeping up of the gardens is due to community involvement. Kaiwaka residents are keen to see their Kaiwaka

Can initiative make progress. This is something that has been simmering for a long time, and now, by working in partnership with New Zealand Transport Agency and the Council, progress is gradually being made in shaping this small and strategic township into a place that will better meet the community’s needs. A good cross-section of Dargaville residents have been immersed in the place-making planning and identifying how to enhance the town’s environment. Mangawhai is where we are experiencing the most growth at present. Here too, residents are coming to the fore to work with the Council to ensure Mangawhai as a whole is wellplaced to cater for future development. These are just a few of the examples of how residents have been getting involved year-round, using their initiative and Council resources to help bring their concepts to life. The growth we are now experiencing as people recognise the benefits of the lifestyle this district offers will hopefully bring more new perspectives as our newer residents settle in and become part of the fabric of Kaipara district. Earlier this month, we also announced the appointment of a new Chief Executive, Graham Sibery. This, combined with a new Council to be elected in October, presents further exciting opportunities for both the Council organisation, and importantly, for the Kaipara community overall.

Time for change in main street Students reuse, recycle  by Andy Bryenton

As seasons are a time for change and renewal in nature — there are also seasons in the business world and change is alive and well in the main street of Dargaville, with businesses moving, renovating and expanding. Behind the paint, banners, scaffolding and refitting, it’s a lot of work to move premises. Just ask Ken from Noise Co, who has packed up his store and made the move — next door. Boxes full of music, movies, musical instruments including guitars and ukuleles, engraving tools and watches have all been transported one step East, into what was the local office of building company Platinum Homes. With a new location comes a new service — those wishing to have their

They’ll be dropping by one day per week to help out with all things ophthalmological, while the usual fare of engraving, watch maintenance, music and computer games (to name but a few) are sure to keep the popular local retailer and keen musician busy. Ken also stocks a variety of Royal London watches. “My new location is a great place to be, I have had a lot of positive feedback from customers,” says Ken. “I’d like to thank Anna and Dave who now have the fun and games store in McKay’s arcade, for the last two years of sharing the old premises as we supported each other in business.“ 

Volunteering is rewarding

Next month a crowd of keen walkers and runners will test their endurance between Baylys Beach and Dargaville as part of the Dargaville Veterinary Centre Baylys 2 Dargaville Run/Walk.

The Salvation Army Family Store in Dargaville is in need of more volunteers to help run the boutique style shop, which has new and near new clothing available alongside a variety of household items, books, toys and linen. “We rely on volunteers to help us in the day-to-day running of the store,” said manager, Mandy Wood. “At the moment we do not have many staff available to help, for various personal reasons.  Dargaville Veterinary Centre Baylys 2 Dargaville Run/Walk is expected to attract hundreds of fitness enthusiasts

Last year the event attracted over 700 participants with over half travelling from outside the Kaipara region. Sport Northland’s Events team leader, Azelia Parkinson, says the goal this year is to attract more locals to compete. “The Sport Northland team is keen to promote the event into the local community and hopes to attract more of the schools and workplaces to support it,” she says. The first three events in the Run/ Walk Series have been dominated by top Northland runners, Harry Linford and Carolyn Younger. If they are successful in Dargaville, they will gain further points on the NorthCloud Leaderboard which will almost put them out of reach, as they move into the second half of the series. Walkers and runners will have the option of picking either the longer 12-kilometre route starting at Baylys Beach at 9am, or the shorter option of 6.8 kilometres which will start at

The dairy farming family now milk 850 cows on the property which Mr James Kidd purchased in 1886 and named Clanrye, and when the Northern Wairoa Dairy Company opened in 1902 they were among the first suppliers. In 2000 James’s great-grandson Roger Kidd and his wife Rachel bought the farm from Roger’s parents Graham and Mary. They have since grown it to 800 acres, which includes re-purchased land previously sold over the years.

“The family have had the farm for 130 years and we are the fourth generation to care for the property. It is great to celebrate our connection with the land, and New Zealand and Kaipara’s rich heritage of farming history,” said Rachel. “The family have been through tough times in the past and like other dairy farmers we are affected at the moment. The key is to try and look at the wider picture and know that in a few years things should start looking good again.”

Te Kopuru resident Pat Bissett says it is thanks to new batteries being put in her smoke alarm that her life was saved when she fell asleep with eggs cooking on the stove recently. “My man put the new batteries in and I had told him to take them out because when you cook the alarm beeps and I don’t like it,” said Pat. “Thankfully he didn’t listen to me. I woke up at 5.15am and was getting ready to go away for the weekend. I thought I would boil some eggs to take with me. “I sat in my chair whilst they cooked and must have dozed off. Suddenly there was a high pitch screaming beep and I woke up wondering what was going on.” Pat says the house was filled with black smoke and when she looked at the stove the pot was on fire. “I got such a fright — got the pot off the stove and threw it away outside. The eggs were unrecognisable. I know that I am lucky to be alive. If my man had listened to me and

 Pat Bissett with the smoke alarm that saved her life

removed the batteries it would be a very different story.” Pat wants everyone to understand the importance of having working smoke alarms and says knowing how close to a total house fire she was is something she won’t forget in a hurry. “Please check you have working smoke alarms in your house. I never thought I would have such an incident happen but it did and I am thankful someone checked mine for me. He certainly saved my life.” If you are unable to check the alarms yourself contact the local fire brigade and they can organise to check them for you.
